A visit to the Museo Rufino Tamayo

Many people visit the Rufino Tamayo Museum, at Morelos 503, expecting to find works by Tamayo. The museum actually houses the great Mexican artist's personal collection of prehispanic, colonial and modern art and artifacts.  Tamayo decided not to display these treasures chronologically, as they would be in an archaeological museum, but instead grouped them by themes that were more meaningful to him artistically. He also designed the displays and painted each room with one of the colors he loved to use in his art.

Guided tours in English are given on Wednesday and Friday at 5 p.m. It's well worth the visit.

Here are just a few of the objects from his collection:

Not Henry Moore or Rodin, but an

ancient, surprisingly abstract Thinker

A face as beautiful as a Greek statue

One of several exquisite female figures,

perhaps priestesses or storytellers
