Night of the Radishes-Noche de Rabanos 2006
This was a special night for Oaxaca. After more than six months of political problems, demonstrations, marches, barricades, and sit-ins, which caused the July 2006 Gueleguetza to be cancelled, nobody knew for sure if Oaxaca's traditional Night of the Radishes would come off as planned, or if it might be disrupted by a demonstration.
To everyone's relief, it was celebrated without incident. As usual, the zocalo was ringed by tables displaying fanciful scenes made entirely from giant radishes, or corn husks, or dried flowers. Since tourists have just stared to trickle back to Oaxaca, there were far fewer visitors than normal. However, everyone who came got to see a beautiful array of traditional scenes in these unique media.
It was one more sign that Oaxaca is getting back to normal, and that it's once again a safe and comfortable place to visit.
Below are a few photos from the 2006 Noche de Rabanos--Night of the Radishes.
